“MAIDEN VOYAGE” - NNENNA FREELON

Among jazz singers, there are only a few that truly reach the heights of master artistry while still projecting their own particular style and perspective through the rich history and traditions of a layered genre like jazz.

Nnenna Freelon has been, one of those singers, and a family favorite for my father and I for years for her Concord Records era albums, most notably for "Maiden Voyage" (1998) and "Heritage" (1993), but for her entire body of work as a singer and band leader as well. Join us for a fun talk about our recollections of seeing her live, our thoughts on her as lyricist, her song bold out of the box song selection, her star-studded band, and beyond.

Her rendition of “Four Women” by Nina Simone and her original “Future New Blues” are two of my favorites by Nnenna. She’s always got a place on my library shelf.
